One Foot in Front of the Other
Total: 55 mins 0 secsThis archival block takes a look back at the history of Bolton through the lens of marching and walking in response to the Winter Hill Mass Trespass of 1896. Over three successive weekends in September 1896 thousands of Boltonians marched over Winter Hill to reclaim a right of way they said had been illegally blocked by the landowner. It became Britain’s biggest mass trespass but the events of 1896 remain largely forgotten. Using archival footage from the North West Film Archive and clips from the 125th anniversary walk in 2021, we aim to revitalise Bolton’s long history of walking by tracing the route of the Mass Trespass from near the town centre to the peak of Winter Hill.
